Friends, not foes. Central Valley bats can reveal much about our region

A new research project by River Partners is using acoustic monitoring to study bat populations at our restoration sites in the Central Valley. The goal is to understand how bats use restored habitats, which will inform the design of future restoration projects so we can better support these economically and ecologically important animals. The data collected will also contribute to continental bat conservation efforts and help track the impact of threats like white-nose syndrome.

“Bats are, until relatively recently, a really expensive animal to be able to study, and it’s just really intensive. Now, using these recording units, it’s an ability to gather data without having to impact them or worry about them for really long periods of time.”
