Growing Native Seed to Fuel California’s Critical 30X30 Restoration, Climate Goals

How Heritage Growers, River Partners’ Native Seed Farm is Breaking the Native Seed Bottleneck

California Natural Resources Agency Secretary Wade Crowfoot asked River Partners President Julie Rentner a question recently: “How is California doing on growing enough native seed for restoring the state?”

As California pushes forward on its historic 30X30 initiative to conserve and restore 30% of its lands and coastal waters by 2030, native seed demand has skyrocketed. Heritage Growers Native Seed and Plant Supply, a native seed venture launched by River Partners in 2021, is leading the charge to meet California’s urgent restoration needs statewide. Heritage Growers is the only non-profit organization in California growing source-identified native seed for restoration at large scale. By collecting a wide variety of native seeds from the wild and growing them out at our native seed farm near Colusa in Northern California, we can expand the genetic diversity of seeds available for restoration.
