Our campaign to recover western monarch butterfly populations made it on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle. Reporter Tara Duggan tagged along with River Partners and Xerces Society biologists during monitoring of some of the 30,000 milkweed plants we restored last year as part of a $1.2 million grant to rescue the western monarchs. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife provided the generous grant.
Monarch populations sharply declined over 99% in recent years due to habitat loss and pesticide use. We’re thrilled to see signs of success for this imperiled and iconic pollinator as we continue to closely monitor for signs of recovery.
