Imagine what it would be like to grow up in a small town on the banks of a major river in California. Hundreds of thousands of children do. You might imagine a childhood of swimming, catching pollywogs, and relaxing in the shade of an oak tree with a cold glass of water. Sadly, the reality is that our rivers are suffering from decades of abuse and neglect. In the backyard of the most prosperous state in America, thousands of children lack access to clean water for drinking, bathing, swimming and playing. Even pollywogs can’t eke out a living here. In the summer, our rivers run dry due to over-allocation of water. During droughts, water wells come up dry. During floods, waste lagoons are overtopped sending raw sewage downstream for miles. This is an environmental disaster, and it is in our own backyard.
At River Partners, we fix these problems. Since 1998, we have brought life back to the riverside. Many of our projects to date have benefited impoverished communities. In the past five years, we have partnered with California Conservation Corps and created jobs for underprivileged youth between the ages of 18 to 24. We continue teaching our youth ecology and biology on the job. As a result, many of these young men and women have pursued their education in ecology and science. Some are now working at River Partners.
We envision a robust and connected riverside community that supports healthy people connected to the river. We think that you do too. After all, we are all made of 65% water.
If you want to honor us by becoming our partner in protecting and restoring California’s floodplains, riversides and wildlife, please consider making a tax deductible donation to River Partners.
95.4% of your donation goes directly into projects. For every dollar that you donate, River Partners leverages nine more dollars for these critical projects.
